ROSEWOOD, GUATEMALAN

Dalbergia spp.

Dalbergia spp. of the family Fabaceae (syn. Leguminosae) the legume, pea, or bean family.

This includes at least the following:

THE ROSEWOODS, REAL and OTHERWISE

my samples:
NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K)
colors will vary under other lighting conditions

both sides of a sample plank of Guatemalan rosewood (rosul) / Dalbergia cubilquitzensis --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. The labeled side is raw but the 2nd side has been sanded to 240 grit and so shows details better and has a richer color.

both sides of a sample plank of Guatemalan rosewood / Dalbergia tucurensis --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. The first side has been fine sanded and in the enlargements it shows the grain details better than the second side. Note that the face grain looks exactly like Honduran rosewood / Dalbergia stevensonii.

both sides of a sample plank labeled as Guatamala rosewood / Dalbergia tucurensis --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. NOTE: based on the end grain update below, I am very doubtful that this actually IS Dalbergia tucurensis. First, the pores are slightly less dense than in all my other samples of Dalbergia tucurensis (and those I found on the internet). I don't consider that too strong all by itself, but much more importantly the banded parenchyma lines that are very clear in all the other samples are totally absent here and equally significantly this sample, unlike any of the others, has growth ring boundaries clearly demarcated by marginal parenchyma. The ONLY sample of rosewood that I have that has an end grain like this is one of Aztec rosewood / Dalbergia calderonii (which is shown on the misc rosewood page).
